Nestled in the verdant Germanic hills of western Czech Republic lies Karlovy Vary, the crown jewel of the Bohemian regions. The city (also known as Karlsbad in the locally spoken German) has hosted many persons of import over its vibrant history. Karl Marx frequented the hot springs for their purported healing abilities. Preceding him by almost a century, Beethoven and Goethe would take walks about the city while discussing music, philosophy and art. Today, Karlovy Vary remains a significant cultural nexus - the annual Karlovy Vary International Film Festival showcases the best and brightest of the independent film circuit to filmmakers and actors looking for the next big thing. Several scenes of 2006’s thriller Casino Royale were shot in the city’s’ landmark Grand hotel Pupp.
