Billiard is a very interesting game and has more in stake than most people who have never touched a cue stick perceive it to be. It is a mental game that requires a good deal of calculations, concentration and focus. The term billiard in fact refers to the number 1015 in mathematics. Thus billiards is not just about racking and hacking the balls for the fun of it. For serious learners, there are several books and also several online resources that can help one to improve. The following are a few billiards tips, tricks and techniques.

Racking the Balls

Racking of balls differs with the type of game being played. For Eight-Ball, the balls are grouped into two, the solids and the stripes. The eight-ball itself is racked at the triangle’s center in the third row. One ball from each of the two groups is racked at each rear corner. For the Nine-Ball, the balls are arranged in a diamond pattern. The one-ball is racked on the foot spot while the nine-ball in racked at the diamond’s center.

The five-ball can be used as the money ball, in which case it is racked at the diamond’s rear. In Straight Pool or 14.1 as it’s also known, the one-ball is placed at the triangle’s rear right, while the five-ball is racked to the left rear. The others are arranged randomly. For Cut-Throat, also known as Elimination, the one-ball is racked at on the foot spot while the six and the eleven balls are racked in the corners.

Beginner and Intermediate Tips

Each player has a personal individualized stroke. Thus the first goal is to attain consistency in the stroke. If one cannot hit what one is aiming at, it becomes difficult to correctly identify mistakes in the game. Practicing on a smooth and straight stroke does a lot of good and one eventually improves. It’s also good to develop a habitual pre-shot routine ensuring the same line up each and every time the player makes shot. This prepares and presents a consistent picture to the brain. Also always line up the eyes with the cue ball path before making a shot. Once able to make consistent easy shots, start planning the game, at least one or two shots ahead. You are now ready to start playing for position. Remember patience pays.

Billiard players may wonder why they fail to see any improvements in their overall game after all the practice and effort they make. The reason for this is that people practice in a negative instead of a positive mode. Playing in a negative mode results into one making wrong moves and as soon as players recognize this, then it is easy to get rid of negative mode of playing and commence the learning process. There is a range of books in the market written in an easy and simple manner for quick understanding with excellent illustrations. Plenty of information is also available over the internet on various websites such as billiardsforum.info that might be a perfect stop for several players.

There are many important aspects to perfecting your game of billiards. A good game starts with the right equipment and the selection of the billiard cue stick. The stick you choose should be heavy rather than light provided it does not feel clumsy or awkward in your hand. The heavier the cue stick is the more it will work for you and the more power you will have behind your shots. A heavier cue is also less likely to move accidentally or shake during the shot. Accuracy is key in playing a good billiards game and a heavy cue stick will allow you to strike the cue ball with more precision.

You will also want to make sure that you are properly positioned when taking a shot if you want to make shots regularly. Your whole body from your feet to your head needs to be positioned so that you are steady, have a good view of your shot, and have good control of the cue stick. Stand firmly and comfortably on both feet being sure to give yourself plenty of support when you lean over the table to take your shot. Your bridge arm should be straight and steady and your back arm should be bent at about a 90 degree angle to allow yourself maximum follow through. Being in a position that allows you the best view of your shot is important so don’t be afraid to get down at table level to better visualize your shot.

The grip you use on your cue stick is also important if you want to successfully control the cue ball. Each shot is unique and requires you to strike the cue ball in a different place. Your grip should be loose enough to allow the cue stick to glide unrestricted in a smooth motion but tight enough to control exactly where the tip strikes the cue ball. Perfecting your grip requires you to find the optimum pressure needed to best control the shot without letting the cue stick slip or restraining it.

If you are a beginner in the popular sport of bowling, you may be a little daunted when it comes to choosing a bowling ball. The different sizes and weights mean that, although there is a suitable ball for you, it may not be easy to work out which one it is. Many people think that if they use a heavy ball it will be easier to knock down all the pins. Some think that using a lighter one will be easier as they can handle it better. There is plenty of choice and you could easily spend a whole session at the bowling alley and try all the different sizes and weights and still not be sure which one is the best option for you.

Not only are the complications when it comes to choosing a bowling ball to suit your size and strength, there are also different options depending upon the alley where you are bowling. Some lanes are referred to as being dry, whilst some are described as oily. These differences are usually apparent to the more experienced and professional bowlers but could affect your game even as a beginner. You will find that some bowlers will have two, or possibly even three, choices of ball with them. This would particularly be the case if they were bowling in a competition away from their home ground where they are not sure about the characteristics of the lanes.

One of the main considerations when choosing a bowling ball as a beginner, is the size and the spacing of the finger holes. The balls are heavy and even the lightest ball is able to cause damage to your hands if the finger holes are not well spaced for you. A professional or experienced bowler who is playing nearly everyday, would probably pay extra for a ball which will be custom built to the exact specifications of his own hands. This will ensure that he not only plays to the best of his abilities but will also lessen the chances of damaging his hands with repetitive strain injuries. These, however, are costly and you would probably not consider this extra expense if you are just starting out in the sport.

If you are just playing at the local bowling alley and do not yet want to go to the expense of purchasing your own bowling balls, you will find a variety of sizes and weights available for you to use. Do not think that the heavier ones will stand more chance of knocking the pins down… they will all achieve this if they are used in the correct way. Likewise do not think that a lighter ball will necessarily have a greater chance of a strike just because you may bowl it faster. Start off by choosing a ball with comfortably spaced finger holes. Then try a ball that is mid-weight. This will usually be a good starting point. If you find that you are overthrowing the ball, then try a slightly heavier one. If you are unable to bowl the ball with any control, perhaps try a lighter alternative.

If you are serious about continuing in the sport and wish to purchase your own ball, pay a visit to a specialist store. There you will be able to handle the balls and there will be experienced staff available who will give you some advice when it comes to choosing a bowling ball which will improve your game and hopefully not cause any aches and pains in your hands and wrists.

I have had the privilege to work with a lot of basketball coaches in my lifetime. I’ve worked with some really good ones and some really bad ones. It’s amazing to me how big of an impact a coach has on his players and the overall success of the team he oversees. Because of my experience, I get asked a lot by young coaches what they can do to make sure they are successful and in this article I want to cover the three main things I tell them.

#1 Set Goals

Players love to play for coaches who set goals. I loved my coaches who met with me individually to set personal goals and team goals. I encourage coaches at all levels to take time to meet with each player individually and find out what they want to accomplish and how they are going to meet those goals. For some players it is simply to shoot foul shots better while others is to score 20 points a game. Find out what these players expect from the coming season as a team. Don’t stop at simply basketball related, but life related. Do they want to go to college? Do they want to play in college? What grade point can they achieve during the season? Find out about each player in depth and it will always improve the relationship. Write down team goals and individual goals and review them at regular intervals.

#2 Set Clear Expectations

Every good coach outlines what he expects from his players. I loved my coaches that told us what they expected from each drill and each practice. I loved coaches that explained to me what they needed out of me specifically and how I could achieve that. Let the players know that you have an active interest in their success. That each drill will be done game speed or they will run ladders. Let them know that you are working just as hard as they are and that you are there to make them better players and teammates. If you don’t set expectations your practices will be sloppy, lazy and worst of all - meaningless for your players.

#3 Teach Your Players That Effort is More Important Than Winning

I’m serious on this one. Effort is more important than winning and players need to know that. When I was younger we played New York City Riverside in a summer league game. This team was absolutely loaded with talent and we knew going in that we had an uphill fight on our hands. We gave everything we had and lost by 12 points. To this day that is one of the most memorable games of my life because I realized that I could compete with the best players in the country. My team’s effort that day was fantastic. Even though we lost, I look back on that game in a positive way. What more can be said. Let your team know that if they do what they are asked to do and give 100% then whatever happens, happens. You’ll find that if you can look each player in the face and tell them that they gave it their all then they will progress as a player and accomplish more in life.

Hitting a softball can be more than difficult especially when the pitcher you are up against is one of the best. Following certain practices and guidelines, can make your job easier and give you a chance to get a hit. The following softball hitting tips are some of those best practices and you should definitely incorporate them into your at-bats when you are up against a great pitcher.

1. Stiff wrists

A player has trouble rolling her wrist over following contact when she grips the bat too far back in her palms. Until she gets back on track, have her, during practice time, place the barrel of the bat on the ground and rest the bat handle across the middle knuckles of her left hand (if she’s right-handed). She then puts her right hand in a similar position above the left and raises the bat up. This way, the bat barely touches the player’s palms.

2. A lack of power

Players lose bat speed, and power as a result, when they move their hands forward right away with their strides, or if they’re opening their hips up too quickly. A hitter needs to keep her hands back for a split second after she takes the initial step. When her hands are back, she generates the power needed to drive through the ball.

3. Make each swing count

You shouldn’t be swinging just for the sake of swinging. Each swing should have a specific goal whether it is to work on a technical element, drive the ball in a specific location, or adjust to a specific pitch.

4. Contact

When making contact with the ball, hit it with the meat of the bat and make sure you take the knob of the bat to the ball.

5. Hit behind the runner

The ability to hit the ball on the ground to the right side of the infield with runners on second or third is invaluable. When hitting behind the runner, you are trading an out for a run. To hit behind the runner, you must keep your hands inside the ball, delay the swing, and make sure that the bat head is above the flight of the pitch.

Eric Enge, the president of Stone Temple Consulting, wrote on searchengineland.com about The Most Powerful SEO Tactic.

Here is the list :
1. Why link building is important: Link building is important because links behave like votes for your site. The more votes you have, the better your rankings will be. This is why Amazon ranks more highly than other sites selling books (e.g. Joe’s Book Store).

2. All links are not created equal: Search engines value the relevance of the link highly. Links from unrelated sites don’t hurt you, but they don’t help nearly as much as links from a relevant site. Also, a link from Amazon counts more than a link from Joe’s book store, because Amazon itself has more links pointing to it.

3. Why link building is an ongoing activity: You must continually do link building because at least one of your competitors will do so. It does not help you that much to climb to the top of the mountain and then rest, because your competitor can still catch up with you and pass you.

4. Why search engines have canonical issues: It is entirely possible to serve up different content at http://yourdomain.com and http://www.yourdomain.com, and it’s possible for that content to be controlled by different people. As a result, search engines need to treat them as separate pages, and this makes one version a duplicate of the other.

5. Why 301s are the preferred redirect: 301 is the only server side redirect which is defined as “Content Moved Permanently.” All the major search engines therefore treat this as a signal to pass through links and history from the old page to the new page. Other forms of redirects do not pass link juice from the old page to the new page.

Yes, I know that search engines are beginning to treat a meta-refresh of zero the same as a 301, but again, we are trying to keep things simple here …

5. What search engines do with duplicate content: Search engines only want to list one copy of a piece of content in their search results, so they pick one version of the content to include in their results for a particular query.

6. Why Search engines care about duplicate content: If a user clicks on one search result and sees a given article, but it is not what they are looking for, the search engine is not helping them by showing more copies of the same content. Diversity in search results helps search quality.

7. How is duplicate content defined?: Exact copies are duplicate content, of course, but so are near copies. Common menus and boilerplate on a site are ignored, and the page’s unique content is evaluated to determine the degree of similarity with other pages. Similarly exceeding a given threshold is considered duplicate.

8. Why buying links is bad: Search engines want to count links to your site as editorial votes for its quality. A purchased link is compensated, and therefore likely not editorial. While discovering paid links algorithmically may be hard, your competitor can spot them visually and report you.

9. Why SEO needs to start during web design SEO requirements place demands on site architecture, including the basic selection of your CMS system, site templates, etc. It’s easier to address this up front than it is to fix it later.

10. Why SEO is strategic: Understanding how to market your site (to get links) on the web is fundamental to SEO. SEOs can help you understand where the best links for your site will most likely come from, and this can affect your marketing strategy and the content you offer on the site.

As a general note, the notion of simplifying is something that can be applied anywhere in life. It is nearly always good.

As it applies to SEO, don’t let SEO be treated as a black art. Yes, because the search engine algorithms are very complicated and unpublished, there is plenty about SEO that is difficult to understand.

But, when communicating to a non-SEO, the most important thing is to get them to understand the basic concepts behind what you are doing. That is something that can usually be explained quite simply. As you get better and better at doing that, your life as an SEO will get better too.

“I have always been thin but all the sitting in front of the PC is taking its toll now that I’m getting older. I have begun to get a little heavier around the waist. I don’t eat a lot but the weight seems to stay on these days. Most of the time I don’t have the luxury of just getting out of the house/office. And being an introvert, I’m not enamored of the idea of exercising in full view of *shudder* people. I regularly do press-ups (60 per night) and sit-ups (30 per night) and some fetching and carrying, but that is all and these days it isn’t enough. I need a solid and effective routine that will tone all my muscle groups efficiently. Do any Slashdotters have a regular workout routine that can be performed in the privacy of the home to stave off those pounds?”
